Money Saver: Making Your Own Laundry Detergent. Recipe

Making your own laundry detergent is a great money saver, and it works very well. Here’s a link with pictures to show you how:

Homemade Liquid Laundry Soap

There is some controversy around making your own laundry detergent:

*Some worry about damaging the machine due to sudsing, but after using it myself, I couldn’t see any suds at all!

*Others wonder if it works as well, and I thought that it did. I even used the Fels Naptha soap bar to rub on stains to be very effective, working just as well or better, than Shout.

*Some think colors look dull after a while; that could be, since commercial mixes contain brightening and whitening agents that fluorescent under ultraviolet lights, and also makes clothing appear cleaner. Yes, they appear cleaner, but that doesn’t mean they are cleaner. These chemical can cause skin irritation and reactions in some people, as well as hurting our environment. Homemade detergent doesn’t contain these chemicals. More information in Smart Klean Blog.

*Finally, there is some concern also, whether the soap can cause build-up inside the machine, in tubes and hosing etc. People have different opinions on that, but if you have an older machine that you don’t worry too much about, it is a great way to save money and your clothes will come out very nice and clean. I did notice build-up in my machine, but after I stopped using the homemade detergent, I still noticed build-up after a while. So apparently there will be some build-up no matter what. Washer Magic worked wonderfully to remove this gray, slimy build-up in my machine:

Making Your Own Spice Rubs and Marinades

Spices and herbs often make a huge difference when you prepare meats and fish; your meal can go from bland to powerful, or anywhere in between, while you add aroma and spice, enhancing the natural flavors that are already there. However, some recipes require large amount of spice, and purchasing ready-made blends at the store can get costly. Why not make the blends yourself, purchasing spices and herbs in bulk? It saves a lot of money, and it often quite easy! I found a page I will be using myself, to add to the rub recipes I already have come to love. You’ll find recipes for dry rubs, wet rubs, or marinades, as well as tips on how to use them. The website is called Rubs.com, plain and simple, and you can find it here: www.rubs.com

Plants that Deter Pests or Attract Beneficial Insects

In my vegetable garden, I often have to endure different pests that are attracted to my vegetable plants, but cause damage. Instead of using harsh chemicals to control them, many plants are beneficial in either keeping away pests, attracting them to focus on one of these plants rather than the ones you want free of damage, or they can help attract other insects that will help rid your garden of your unwanted pests. Here are some great, easy to read lists or articles that will point out several beneficial plants, and in which way they are helpful. Some are flowers, others are herbs. Flowers and herbs have the added benefit of adding beauty to your garden, or food.
